Ashley Finigan-James ‘08

Ashley Finigan-james is currently the Assistant Director for Equity and Community Engagement at the Brearley School in New York City. Previous professional experience includes Upper School History and American Studies Teacher at Berkeley Carroll School (2017-2023); Lecturer and guest speaker in African American history and culture with talks given at The Chicago Cultural Center, Cal Poly - Pomona; the DuSable Museum, the Lake Park and Lake Forest Museum and Sony BMG Music (2020-present); NYU faculty first look scholar, class of 2020; Instructor in the College at the University of Chicago in History and the and Public Policy (2014-2017); Archivist at the Vivian G. Harsh Collection in the Chicago Public Libraries (2012-2014); High school History Teacher at the School of Arts and Technology (2008-2009)

Ashley is a proud native New Yorker and resides in Brooklyn with her family. She is a passionate fan of 90s and early 2000s era sitcoms, enthusiastic pen pal, listener of audiobooks and enjoys visiting art galleries, parks, and spending time with her loved ones and friends from Amherst.

Dr. Cyndy Jean ‘07

Dr. Cyndy Jean currently works as the Associate Head of School at a Co-Ed Private K-12 institution in New York. She also works with the Klingenstein Center to coach and lead a program for educators designing change within their independent schools. Her current research focuses on Black women in educational leadership. She conducts trainings and workshops focused on equity practices and supporting early career teachers as they transition into careers in independent schools.

Cyndy works with three non-profit organizations: one focuses on building educational access for children in Haiti, another provides critical resources to families in Haiti, and the last is designed to provide young adults in under-resourced communities access to internships and career support.

Cyndy is a mother of two amazing kids (Zadie and Zion). She loves to travel (solo and with my family), play tennis, cook, sing, and explore cultural events in New York City. Cyndy is also involved in her local Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Chapter and serves on the executive board.

Dr. John Riggins ‘12

Dr. John Riggins Jr. is the Assistant Medical Director, Emergency Management at New York Presbyterian-Allen Hospital. He is also an assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Chair of the Diveristy, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee at New York Presbyterian-Columbia.

John was a Black Studies and Pre-Med major during his time at Amherst. He also performed in the Terras Irradiant (TI) a-cappella group and Jazz band. John was a member of the BSU, chair of the Black Men’s Group, and a member of the Christian Fellowship group

His current community and volunteer service includes being a Taft School board of Trustees member.

Mark Robinson ‘78

Mark Robinson has spent the past 40+ years in advertising at some of the industry’s most prestigious agencies. Mark has been featured in Fortune magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Advertising Age. Mark is a past member of the American Advertising Federation’s Multicultural Marketing Leadership Council, a national touring lecturer for the Advertising Educational Foundation, and an ongoing mentor for MAIP (Minority Advertising Internship Program) for the American Association of Advertising Agencies. Mark was chosen by filmmaker Spike Lee to co-found and manage his new agency, Spike/DDB. In 1998, Mark launched Heritage Apparel, an internet-based clothing company that celebrated African American history and heroes. In 2001, he was recognized as the Entrepreneur of the Year for the successful launch of his next company, S/R Communications Alliance; the first 100% minority-owned network of 10 multicultural advertising companies, with combined business of $225 million.

Mark was part of a group of community activists that formed ROUND (Ridgefielders Organized for Understanding and Diversity) and served as its chairman. ROUND organized and hosted dozens of community events over the years, including launching the area’s very first annual Gay Pride Festival. ROUND also inaugurated the town’s first Martin Luther King Day Celebration, which Mark organized and has hosted for the past 27 years. His community and volunteer service spans decades including work with the State of Connecticut Board of Education, the New York City Human Rights 2006 Commission investigation of workforce diversity in advertising agencies, co-founding the Ridgefield Allies organization, taking steps to highlight what each of us can do as individuals to educate, inspire, and motivate our community in the cause of social justice, equity and inclusion

In 2021, Mark released the best-selling memoir, “Place of Privilege”, about his experiences as one of the very first young Black boys to attend and integrate the prestigious and ultra-exclusive Dalton School in New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The success of the first book was followed by the 2023 release of “Black On Madison Avenue”, his second book, about life as a Black professional in one of the most un-diverse white collar professions in America.

As an alumnus, Mark was one of the organizers of the first Amherst Black Alumni Reunions, beginning back in 1980, and has attended every reunion since. He created the Amherst Black Alumni Listserv and administered the listserv in its first few years. Mark organized the Amherst Black Alumni trip to see Jeffrey Wright perform "A Free Man of Color" at the Lincoln Center Theater, as well as a special reception for Jeffrey after the show. He has also been a mentor to multiple Black students at Amherst as part of the Pathways Mentoring program.
